Victor grew up around his family, until they sent him away to school. But before they sent him off to college his mother died. Also the family adopted a girl named Elizabeth, who was Victor's aunt's daughter. So biologically she was Victors cousin but his mother Caroline thinks they should marry. Alchemy is the early study of biology, and Victor was very interested in life, evolution and the human body. Which I think is evident, because he creates a monster. Reading the book though it seems like Victor's studies were more like an obsession, instead of just educating himself.
